UPDATED: Rest in Peace: Chris Cornell

We have some incredibly tragic news as it’s been confirmed that Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell died at age 52 last night in Detroit after a Soundgarden performance. There is no cause of death yet, and an official statement explains that the family will be “…working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.

UPDATE – 11:27AM PT: The medical examiner has ruled Cornell’s death as suicide by hanging.

Cornell was known for being one of the greatest vocalists in the rock genre. He was considered to be one of the pioneers of the grunge movement in the early 90’s with his band Soundgarden as well as the lesser known but still important Temple of the Dog. Later he would join ex-members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave, who would release three studio albums, each highly successful. He also released several solo albums and collaborated with dozens of musicians over his career.

For me, Cornell will always be associated with “Black Hole Sun,” a music video that, in my childhood, never failed to unsettle and spook me. It was also one of those videos that, no matter how much it frightened me, I could never turn my head away from. To this day, “Black Hole Sun” is a personal favorite song.

We send our deepest condolences to Cornell’s family members, friends, peers, and countless fans around the world.
